Facts About National Flag of Paraguay

The Paraguayan national flag consists of 3 horizontal stripes – bottom stripe is blue, the middle stripe is white, the top stripe is red. There is an emblem in the middle of white strip.

The back of the flag has the Treasury seal of the country on it and the front has the state coat of arms of the country. The state arms consist of a blue disc with 5 yellow stars on it. The star is surrounded by an olive and palm branch. The name of the country is written in Spanish on a circular band. The Treasury Seal shows a lion guarding the Phrygian cap.

The seal is surmounted by the national motto of Paraguay: 'Paz y Justicqa', meaning 'Peace and Justice'.

Paraguay adopted the flag on 27th November, 1842 and became the oldest flag of the world. The country became independent on 15th May, 1811. The colors of the national flag of Paraguay, which were inspired by the French flag, are considered as the colors of independence and liberty. Separately, blue color stands for liberty, truth and benevolence; the white stripe represents unity; and the red symbolizes patriotism, equality and courage. The coat of arms represents the independence date of Paraguay. The palm branch represents honor and the olive branch represents peace. The treasury seal is a symbol of liberty. The national flag of Paraguay is the only flag in the world which has different emblems on the front and back.
