Constitution article of 193 is for a Supreme Court of Justice of no less than 5 associates and for other justices and tribunals to be set up by law.

The Supreme Court controls all other parts of the judicial branch that consist appellate courts with 3 associates each in the parts of civil, criminal, commercial and administrative jurisdiction; courts of first order in these same 4 parts; justices of the serenity dealing with more minor problems; and military courts.

The Supreme Court hears clashes regarding jurisdiction and competency prior to it and has the supremacy to announce presidential act or unconstitutional any law. As of year 1988, nevertheless, the court had in no way stated illogical any of Stroessner's acts.

Supreme Court justices give 5 year terms of office concomitant with the National Congress and the president and might be reappointed. They should be a citizen of Paraguay, at least 35 years old, have a university degree of Doctor of Laws, have renowned knowledge in lawful issues, and have an outstanding status for integrity.
