The Armed Forces of Paraguay

The Paraguayan armed forces consist of the army, navy and air force. The president of Paraguay has been established as the commander-in-chief by the constitution of Paraguay.

The Paraguayan military forces are one of the strongest armed forces in the world. The Government of Paraguay spends about 125 million dollars on the military force. Every male completing 18 years of age are liable to join the military. They have to go through a military duty for at least one year. After that they have the choice of either to join the military or choose a different profession.

The Paraguayan Army consists of 2 battalions, Presidental Escort Regiment, a battery of field artillery, and an armored squadron. The equipments include 3 M-4 tanks (Argentinean modified), 4 EE-11 APCs (armored personnel carriers), 4 EE-9 armored cars, 4 M-101 105 mm howitzers. The EP features one anticraft artillery group and two artillery groups.

Paraguay has a strong naval tradition because it has access to the Atlantic Ocean. The Paraguayan navy has 6 bases. The main base of the navy is the Puerto Saxony located in Asuncion, followed by Negra, Bahia, Encamacion, Ciudal del Este, Salto del Guaria. The Marine corps of the naval forces have eight hundred marines, out of which four hundred are given to 1 commando unit and the rest are organized into a single battalion which consists of 3 companies. The Paraguayan Navy has 34 surface ships, 17 patrol boats, tug boats, a presidential yacht, transports and landing craft.

The Paraguayan air force, the smallest and newest of the services, has about 1,100 personnel. The air force is organized in a brigade of paratroopers and an Air Brigade of 7 air groups. Almost all the operating units of air force are based in premises at SGAS (Silvio Pettirosi internacional airport) in Asuncion. The GTA, a (an) Air Transport Group, operates aircraft of Beechcraft, DHC-6 and CASA types. The HLG, a Helicopter sir group, has a squadron of attack craft, a utility squadron and a SAR squadron.
