The government is still allowing for a mulling to donate helicopters to its political friend, the Republic of Paraguay, and bureaucrat said recently. The Executive general of the Division of Latin American, James Wu, and Caribbean Affairs under Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), prepared the remarks to refute a previous report that the government has decided to Paraguay 11 US-made UH-1H helicopters."The content of the report is correct," said James Wu.
Although Paraguay asked Taiwan earlier this year to acquire helicopters which have been out of service, Wu said he did not ask the exact number of helicopters, adding that no final decision on the issue has been prepared yet. "We are still discussing the matter with the Ministry of National Defense (MND)," James Wu said, while adding that it moreover depends on whether the Ministry of Defence has adequate helicopters to offer.
The government has been the donating helicopters that have been removed from its own service to the South American ally since 1999, according to Wu. Wu said that if the government accedes to the request of Paraguay, the cost of replacing older helicopters before donating them it will be covered from the budget which is established for mutual cooperation projects.
In the meantime, the statement also stated that the Taiwan's helicopter donation involves prior notification to the US. In response, Wu said this is a necessary procedure and the Ministry of Defense which will be responsible for notifying the U.S. if the government agrees with the giving away of a helicopter.
