The Freedom of Religion in Paraguay

Freedom of religion is the freedom of a community or an individual to follow, worship, practice, hold belief in teaching and observe any religion in a public or private place.

It also recognizes the freedom to change your religion or stop following any religion.

The constitution of Paraguay and other laws and policies provides the citizens of the country with free practice of religion. Against any abuse the rights are protected at all levels.

In Paraguay, there are people belonging to Jehovah's Witnesses, Jews, Muslims, Mennonites and the Baha’is religion. The people who are born in Paraguay tend to be Catholic while the immigrants are followers of various religious groups. The members belonging to different groups are concentrated in the largest cities of Paraguay like the capital city Asuncion, Encarnacion and Ciudad Del Este. The catholic group has less per capita income than the non-catholic group.

The Paraguayan’s right to freedom of religion is protected by its constitution. The constitution and other law protect the individual’s right to change, choose and freely practice any religion. They also provide remedies for violation of freedom of religion and also for legal protection from discrimination.

n Paraguay, there are no reports of any religious prisoners or detainees. Even though there is secularism in name and practice of any religion, the government officials are Catholic in religion. To promote tolerance for religious beliefs and religions the government tries to takes proper steps. The rights mentioned in the religious clauses constitutionally guarantee the freedom of religion. There is no specific official religion of the Paraguayan constitution and it has recognized the right to freedom of religion. The Paraguay’s constitution guarantees the independence of religion to its every citizen.
