The Freedom of Press in Paraguay

The freedom of Press is the freedom of expression as well as communication which includes different electronic media and publishing materials. The right to freedom of expression and opinion is owned by everyone and can contain information and ideas through any media.

The constitution of Paraguay supports the basic rights of press and the legal framework facilities to its citizens.

According to the UN Refugee Agency in Paraguay, the law provides freedom of press but still some journalist had to face government harassment. The president of Paraguay Fernando Lugo defends the freedom of press for private media. In Paraguay, many of the major newspapers, radio stations and television stations are privately owned. IPParaguay is the news agency that is being owned by the government and was launched in January 2009. In 2009, verbal attacks were launched against the newspaper ABC Color by the progovernment group. The managing director Aldo Zuccolillo of the ABC color newspaper was charged with 20 criminal charges for defamation suits.

The major concern is for the distribution of official advertising. The several broadcasters that were in process of getting permit were acknowledged by the government support of the communications minister, as stated by the UN Refugee Agency. The government has no restrictions on the internet access and almost 15 percent of the Paraguayan population uses the internet.

Freedom of press is only offered to those who own one. Without the interference of government; the businesses, individuals and organizations are able to publish information only if they own their own publication. Press is defined as any sort of publication that affords a vehicle of opinion and information which includes everything right from newspapers to blogs.
