Forestry - A key economic resource

In Paraguay, approximately one-third of total area is covered under forests. The country’s key economic resources are the wooded areas like the timber exports and extracts as well as fuelwoods.

Commercially valued timber constitutes half of the woodlands of Paraguay. Since years, forests are playing an important role in the economic development of Paraguay because of the processing of resilient quebracho and yerba mate.

More than forty-five species of woods were suitable for export from the country’s woodlands but in actual, less than ten species were only exported. The wood exports of Paraguay were internationally competitive and it was known as the exporter of fine timber.

Instead of many premium forests, deforestation was increasing at an alarming rate. This was caused due to tree burning, farming practice, agricultural colonization, and felling of trees for charcoal. Fuelwood was the most important domestic source of energy whose consumption in Paraguay was the highest in whole Latin America.

With the distribution of population and forestlands, the complication for deforestation also increased rapidly. The large number of shrubs and forestlands were maintained in Chaco, which was not subjected to any economic exploitation.

The government of Paraguay recommended the modernization of lumber industry and plantation of fast growing trees. After these levels of reforestation and deforestation, analysts stated that, by 2020 few lands for commercial lumbering would be available.

Very well known for substantial rainfall and subtropical temperatures, Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America that is facing the danger of losing its country’s defining feature i.e. the tropical woodlands. It is very important that the Paraguayans work on maintaining the country’s defining feature.
