Football
Soccer is the most popular game in Paraguay. Dutchman William Paats, who moved from Netherlands to the capital of the country in 1888, introduced this game to Paraguayans. Arseni Erico, Romerito, Jose Luis Chiavert and Aurelio Gonzalez are the most famous and successful football players of the country. The National Team of Paraguay has played in 8 World Cups, won 2 Copa America tournaments and achieved a silver medal in 2004 Olympic Games.
Rugby Union
Rugby Union is another popular sports of Paraguay. The country has nineteen rugby clubs and 4,355 registered players, Paraguay ranks 38thin the world and 5th in South America. The governing body for rugby is Union de Rugby del Paraguay which was established in 1970 and later joined the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB) in 1989. San Jose RC, Cristo Rey RC, C.I.T., Asunción RC, Leones de Encarnación, Santa Clara, Universidad Autónoma are some of the major clubs of the country.
Tennis
Tennis also plays a significant role in Paraguayan sports. Ramon Delgado, Francisco Gonzalez, Rossana de los Rios, Victor Pecci, Victor Caballero, Hugo Chapacu are some of the well known tennis players of Paraguay.
Basketball
Basketball was being played in Paraguay since 1936 when no governing body existed. But now, the Paraguayan Sports Association governs it. The PBF (Paraguayan Basketball Federation) was formed in 1947. The PBF manages both the Metropolitan League (for teams from Asuncion) and National League (for teams outside of Asunción), and runs the national basketball team of Paraguay.
