Jose Saturnino Cardozo Otazu is a former football striker in the Paraguayan national team, who was born on 19th March 1971 and is presently the coach of a Paraguayan Club Olimpia.
He has played the 1998 and 2002 World Cups for Paraguay with an all time record of being the leading goal scorer for the national team with 24 goals. He would have played the 2006 World Cup but he was injured during the practice session and replaced by Dante Lopez.
Cardozo started his football career, making his debut for the Club River Plate of Paraguay in 1988. After four years, he moved from the Club River Plate and joined FC St. Gallen, a Swiss club and played for the club from 1990 to 1992. In 1993, he returned to South America signing a deal with Universidad Catolica de Chille, a popular club in Santiago, where he played an important role to take the team till the final of Copa Libertadores de America. He then jumped on to Club Olimpia in the following year. In 1995, he played for Toluca and continued with the club for 8 years with the record of 235 goals, excluding 14 goals in 2004 Apertura.
Cardozo has won the Paraguayan Footballer of the year for three year, 2000, 2002 and 2003 along with the South American Footballer of the year in 2002. His further career was filled with injuries that kept him away from several tournaments. He had a hamstring problem and also suffered from a broken wrist.
Cardozo tried to return to Club Olimpia in July 2006 to play his last tournament, but was unable to join as the signing deadline for Paraguayan league was expired. This was the time he decided to retire from international football. Cardozo became the coach for the Paraguayan club Olimpia in November 2006. He was the FIFA top scorer of the year 2003 with 58 goals.
