Paraguayan Harps - The Magical Instrument

Luque city, located in Paraguay, is a part of urban area of Gran Asuncion and is popular for several reasons. It is famous for its creation of harps and for several stringed instruments.

Harp is the official instrument of Paraguay and social clubs, politicians and even soccer teams are all recognized by the harp artist that identify them. There are various shops that sell the harps, located on the road side which leads to the airport.

According to Lino Ruiz Diaz, the famous harp maker, Pablo Ramirez was responsible for the harp neck design that soon became the popular harp neck in Paraguay. The neck is designed with two half sections of wood that are laminated by the harp maker and the strings come from the holes that are situated in the center of the harp neck.

The designed harp is symmetrical and has perfectly centralized (pressure) zones that permit the harp to have a light construction that is not accomplished in any type of harp. New versions of harp are usually tall around 5 feet and will weigh up between seven and twelve pounds.

In Luque, most of the harps have 36 strings, but few harp makers use nearly 40 strings. The strings are spaced closer, to offer many rooms for string vibrations and the artist’s fingers.

The harps consist of a single hole for sound in the bottom of sound box; sometimes there are more than one holes added to the back section of sound box. Usually, all the tuning pegs were developed from hard wood, but nowadays, the modern harps have aluminum tuning pegs. While, some designers also use pegs that feature guitar pegs.

Luque harps are one of the most famous harps in South America and are becoming more popular in the world. Several harpists in Chile and Ecuador select the Paraguayan harps for their performance. Now, Paraguayan harps are being manufactured in various other parts of the world including United States and Europe.
