Eladio Martinez was a famous singer as well as composer of Paraguay. He was born on 19th May 1912 in Paraguay. His parents were Benitez Nicolasa and Lorenzo Martinez. Eladio Martinez belongs to a family of musicians.
Initially, he learned to play the flute and later on, the guitar. His most memorable contribution to music was as a singer and composer.
In 1928, Eladio Martinez moved to Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. The folk fans Centurion Roque Miranda conducted a contest at Municipal Theatre in 1930 in which he participated and won the 1st prize representing Villarica and doing Che la reina of Felix Perez Cardozo and Emiliano R Fernandez. This event influenced him to become a professional musician.
Eladio Martinez visited Montevideo, Uruguay and later on moved to Buenos Aires in 1931, where he joined the Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo in the popular duo ‘Martinez Cardozo’. It was the first Paraguayan band which performed at the important SODRE Hall of Montevideo.
Eladio Martinez married Aida Ayala and his sons are Jorge Lobito and Lobo Martinez. Eladio Martinez directed radio shows for 15th years in Buenos Aires such as “Polkas and Guarani’s” and ‘Momento musical Paraguayo’ in Radio Cultura.
In 1948, Eladio Martinez was invited in London for Olympic Games, which was supported by Sir Eugen Millington Drake, to compensate for the absence of Paraguayans in Olympic activities. He also invited the Albino Quinonez, the harpist and the composer named as Emigdio Ayala Baez, who had discovered the ‘Guarania Oracion a mi amada’ and in English ‘Prayer to my love’, the famous loving song in Paraguay.
The group named as ‘Olympic Trio’, performed with great achievements in special television shows at the BBC, singing at the Olympic delegations of different countries, at the University of Oxford and also performing to its own Royal family, extending his tour to several European cities.
After many years of talented international career, Eladio Martinez decided to return to his land. During 1970s, he became a symbol in trying to save and promote the folk-inspired music at the universities. Then after, he received the nickname ‘El Grande’, because of his great popularity and belonging to the extraordinary generations of Paraguayan musicians. He added his natural gift of speech to his composer and singer skills.
Eladio Martinez, accompanied by his voice and guitar went to Japan where the World Youth Football Championship was carrying out. Before his death, he directed a famous radio show in Radio Tajy of Asuncion named as "Una guitarra en la noche", sweetly harmonized with songs and comments.
